I’ve named this essay “The Fundamentals of Love,” because although we have been debating Love, we keep forgetting the basics. This is what we should looking at. It is not how and when they fall for each other that is the overall question, it’s what is fundamental to falling in love. Basically, I will discuss four fundamentals of Love which are: Attraction, Trust, Forgiveness and Interest.
Each one is crucial for our question: What is the basis for falling in love with someone? There is a big difference between falling in love and being purely sexual attracted. Mainly, you don’t need any kind of background story to be interested in someone on a sexual level. Love is about the character—the impression this person makes on you. Sexual attraction is about appearance, meaning you see someone and you are immediately attracted without knowing this person. There exists no question about what the basis of this is and it happens rather quickly; and this is where love differs significantly. That’s why we ought to take a closer look at The Fundamentals of Love.

Attraction

1)
Harry is attracted to Hermione. If we look more closely at the word attraction it means more than just attraction of body.

In the books, from the very first until the current book we can read that Harry is attracted to Hermione.
Attraction:
1. The act or capability of attracting.
2. The quality of attracting; charm.
3.
1. A feature or characteristic that attracts.
2. A person, place, thing, or event that is intended to attract: The main attraction was a Charlie Chaplin film.
4.
1. The electric or magnetic force exerted by oppositely charged particles, tending to draw or hold the particles together.
2. The gravitational force exerted by one body on another

and

1: the force by which one object attracts another [syn: attractive force] [ant: repulsion] 2: an entertainment that is offered to the public 3: the quality of arousing interest; being attractive or something that attracts; "her personality held a strange attraction for him" [syn: attractiveness] 4: a characteristic that provides pleasure and attracts people [syn: attractive feature] 5: an entertainer who attracts large audiences; "he was the biggest drawing card they had" [syn: drawing card, draw]

Therefore Harry is attracted to Hermione's personality through the series. He admires her deeply, so much that he defends her actions to his own girlfriend.

Conclusion: Attraction isn't only based on physical attractiveness; it is in fact, much more based on personality. Without personality (example Cho) the first physical attraction cannot last. It might even be said that since Harry never paid much attention to Hermione’s outward appearance from the start of their relationship, but knows her very well otherwise and is very close to her, he is attracted to her.

1.1) Harry is 15 years old and to be attracted in a quality of arousing interest is enough time there.

Harry met Hermione in the age of 11 and at this age most boys aren't directly attracted to girls. This is especially true if this girl later becomes a best friend. As friends you are more focused on the personality—more on the person, that’s why you aren't directly attracted (in a sexual way). Hermione has been very close to Harry for five years. At the beginning of puberty a boy would not necessarily focus on the girl who is so close to him. On the contrary, he would tend to look outward and begin noticing girls he hadn’t seen although he’d been at the same school with them for two years. In Harry's third year he recognises Cho a very pretty girl indeed. She was in fourth year at that time. This tells us that when Harry came to school, she was in her second year, but he never noticed her until Book Three, when he was thirteen.

Conclusion: The argument Harry isn't attracted to Hermione is not correct since Harry is very much attracted to Hermione. Furthermore, if we say Harry has to be attracted to Hermione in a sexual sense, then we forget the very fact that Hermione is way too close for this sudden sexual attraction from Harry.
He has known her since she was 11, he sees her everyday. It’s utterly normal that Harry is physically attracted to her for the first time at the Yule Ball. Many of the R/Hr shippers claim that Harry and Hermione never demonstrated physical attraction as did Ron and Hermione. These arguments would only work, however, if the children were five years older. Because they became friends, because Harry saw Hermione during the past five years nearly every day and in all situations, is it absolutely normal that he is not attracted to her yet in a sexual way. Ron isn't attracted to Hermione either.
Result: This argument is pointless because it is not based on the meaning of Attraction itself nor does it consider that Harry was eleven when he met Hermione or that Harry is with Hermione everyday since the age of eleven.

1.2)
The semantic of the word Attraction is important for exploring the question of whether Harry is attracted to Hermione.

Without knowing what “attraction” means and can mean, it isn't possible to argue about whether Harry is attracted to Hermione or not. But since it’s proven that attraction means also: 3: the quality of arousing interest; being attractive or something that attracts; "her personality held a strange attraction for him" [syn: attractiveness] 4: a characteristic that provides pleasure and attracts people [syn: attractive feature] the concept of attraction existing between the two of them becomes very compelling.

Charm, Personality and Character

1.3)
After a semantic of the word Attraction we can draw a parallel between the Harry--->Cho and the Harry---->Hermione attraction especially by looking at canon and the meaning of Veela in this context.

PoA, chapter 13, page 281, UK.
Their Seeker, Cho Chang, was the only girl in their team. She was shorter than Harry by about a head, and Harry couldn’t help noticing, nervous as he was, that she was extremely pretty. She smiled at Harry as the teams faced each other behind their captains, and he felt a slight jolt in the region of his stomach that he didn’t think had anything to do with nerves

Note that Harry notices Cho’s looks-- how pretty she is. In fact, Harry's crush was based entirely on her looks. Let’s compare this with the Veela.

GOF, chapter 8, page 116, UK.
But hundred Veela were now gliding out onto the pitch, and Harry's question was answered for him. Veela were woman...the most beautiful women Harry had ever seen...
somewhat later:

page 126
Harry saw that they didn't look remotely beautiful now. On the contrary, their faces were elongating into sharp, cruel-beaked bird heads....
'And that, boys,' yelled Mr Weasley over the tumult of the crowd below, 'is why you should never go for looks alone.'

If we compare Harry's attraction to Cho, it was limited to her appearance only just like the Veela. As soon as Harry got the chance to know Cho’s personality, he was no longer attracted to her. In canon, Harry does not once admire her personality, it’s always limited to her appearance--exactly what some people say is lacking in Harry’s relationship with Hermione.

GoF, chapter 18, page 347.
Hermione had come in for her fair share of unpleasantness, too, but she hadn't yet started yelling at innocent bystanders; in fact, Harry was full of admiration for the way she was handling the situation

This isn't the only quote where Harry admires and is in fact attracted to Hermione's character/personality. If we draw a parallel to this Quote:
'And that, boys,' yelled Mr Weasley over the tumult of the crowd below, 'is why you should never go for looks alone.'

And bring in this scene:

GOF, chapter 23, page 452, UK
His eyes fell instead on the girl next to Krum. His jaw dropped.
It was Hermione.
But she didn't look like Hermione at all. She had done something with her hair; it was no longer bushy but sleek and shiny, and twisted up into an elegant knot at the back of her head. She was wearing robes made of a floaty, periwinkle-blue material, and she was holding herself differently, somehow - or maybe it was merely the absence of the twenty or so books she usually had slung over her back. She was also smiling - rather nervously, it was true - but the reduction in the size of her front teeth was more noticeable than ever; Harry couldn't understand how he hadn't spotted it before.

Harry is also attracted to her appearance though Hermione's personality seems to be brought to the attention of the reader more because not only has the reader known her longer, Harry has too.

Conclusion: Attraction means to be attracted by character and personality, too. With this in mind the relationship between Cho and Harry couldn't work because Harry wasn't attracted to her personality just to her appearance. Harry was attracted to Cho like a Veela. It’s the same concept, with the same result.
On the other hand, we have Hermione which appeared through OotP be more important to Harry than Cho ever was. The reason for this was Harry is attracted to Hermione's character. This is an attraction which goes deeper than an attraction based in appearance alone. After years of knowing someone you aren't that attracted to their appearance because you are used to it, you see it everyday. But when it comes to character, the real basis of attraction, you are continually attracted because you are always discovering something new to admire. That’s the very basis of Love--to be attracted by character. From this point of view, we can see that Harry is attracted to Hermione.

2)

It’s not about being good looking. Like Harry has to be attracted to Hermione in the way that true Veela could attract him, nor has Hermione to be attracted to Harry like he is the most handsome guy on this planet. We keep forgetting what Love is about. Why is falling in Love so much different than having a crush? Because a crush doesn’t work like love. Like the word itself tells us, its suddenly, like someone hits you badly with a hammer and you try to come to yourself again.
We discover a crush in canon. It’s happened to Harry in his third year when he was thirteen years old.

This is how it started. In this scene, Harry saw her for the very first time. That’s why it’s an excellent example to show how a crush works. He didn’t know her, in fact hadn’t seen her before this match. This tells us it started only with looks and smiling at each other like someone slaps you. But we shall go on to the scene as it ends.

OotP, chapter 30, page 603, UK
Harry felt his stomach perform, less of a back flip, more a feeble lurch as Cho walked out on the pitch, her shiny black hair rippling in the slight breeze, He was not sure what he wanted to happen any more, except that he could not stand any more rows. Even the sight of her chatting animatedly to Roger Davis as they prepared to mount their brooms caused him only a slight twinge of jealousy.

It is evident at this stage in the relationship that Harry is exhibiting emotional coldness. The only scene in this relationship which seems to be nice was in the owlery in OoP. I could not have written a crush better. There wasn’t any suffering if Harry had a fight with Cho. In fact he was more affected when he fought with Hermione in that book. This brings me back to the topic. This crush was a pretty long one but nothing what went deep enough. As fast as Harry was together with Cho, so were they apart again. There might be several explanations for this, but the most important of all was the lack of trust in each other.
This brings me to love. As we’ve just seen, JKR gave Harry a crush which lasted two years, this is to say three books. During the second year Cho was actually referred to as Harry’s dream girl. I said and still say Love is much slower than a crush could ever be and much more intense. I expect JKR will give Love more time, a lot more time. It is not just two years it’s a built up over seven years.

This brings me to Hermione Granger and to her introduction in the books. She was introduced twice I will elaborate it further.

PS/SS, chapter 6, page 79, UK
She had a bossy sort of voice, lots of bushy brown hair and rather large front teeth.

This isn’t a girl the reader would expect to later become the love interest for our hero. It’s an interesting way to show us Hermione Granger because it’s the first impression and if we follow this path logically, Harry would never fall for her. It’s important for the fundamentals of love that Hermione is not a looker nor someone who is like a little princess with pleasant voice, hair, face and everything else just perfect. JKR chose instead the route of the heart, the route of true love.

This is the second time Hermione was introduced. It’s interesting to know that after four books where Hermione showed her very heart and her loyalty countless times, that she appears in this book as a pretty girl; that JKR shows her as young woman who is not at all the same girl as before, not anymore the bookworm, know-it-all. It’s like presenting Hermione from the inside out.

Conclusion: It’s important that she was the only one in GOF who stood by Harry’s side though she knew the consequences. She stood at his side in spite of having to talk to him when he was invisible and having to suffer because of those articles. She never left his side and never blamed him for what had happened. In this book she showed what kind of heart she has once again. That’s why JKR allowed her to appear pretty in this book, because in Goblet of Fire, she was exactly that--from the inside out.
We see the difference between the first impression and the second. At first we got to know Hermione from the inside to the outside. It seems to be JKR’s goal to let Harry fall for this girl because of her heart and not because she is astoundingly pretty or beautiful. That’s probably the reason why we don’t read after this one episode in GoF, how pretty Hermione is countless times; because this doesn’t count as much as her heart counts. What we get are descriptions like “Hermione glows.” This is by far different than just remarking time and time again that her hair is shining because a glow comes from inside, shining hair is just outside. We as readers don’t get to know Cho; not her heart. All what we get are cold descriptions from outside until we get to a point where we sympathize with Harry because this girl seems to cry again and again. The only time we are able to understand Cho is through Hermione because she explains to us why Cho is acting like that. It’s ironic that after we get a chance to understand Cho we dislike her again for her jealousy against Hermione—the girl who made us understand her. From this POV which is Harry’s POV we see Hermione as a saint and Cho as the person who we don’t understand.
This brings me to the next element of the fundamentals.

Trust

This is by far the most important part of all fundamentals of love because without trust you can’t build up a relationship. Hermione and Harry share exactly this kind of trust: A trust which permits you to follow someone to an unknown destiny without flinching. Through the years this trust has built up to a level which goes beyond friendship. I’ll come back to this later. But first I’d like to show how this trust was developed.

PS/SS, chapter 9, page 119, UK:
”Oh, move over,” Hermione snarled. She grabbed Harry’s wand, tapped the lock and whispered, “Alohomora!”

Its important to note that at this time Harry and Hermione weren’t even friends. Ron who was at this time Harry’s best and only friend was not able to rescue them.

page 118:
”This is it!” Ron moaned, as they pushed helplessly at the door. “We’re done for! This is the end!”

Here lies the basis of why Harry started to trust Hermione that much. Because it had been she who found a solution and not Ron and they weren’t even friends yet. Trust began separate from this friendship. This may even be the reason why this trust extends beyond the type of trust shared between freinds.

chapter 11, page 140:
Reaching Snape, she crouched down, pulled out her wand and whispered a few, well chosen words.

At Harry’s first match It was Hermione again who rescued him, not Ron nor Hagrid. This patter is established throughout the whole book.

chapter 16, page 198:
Harry turned to Hermione. “Do something,” he said desperately.

Harry turns to Hermione and not to Ron because of what had been established before. In this case Harry trusts her much more than Ron. This trust is already on a very high level because he could trust her before he was even friends with her. This is the fundamental reason why Harry trusted Hermione enough to drink the potion. In the second book the pattern of trust continues. In fact Harry trusts her with his life. In book three we see how deep this trust is.

PoA, chapter 12, page 253, UK:
Harry knew that Hermione had meant well, but that didn’t stop him being angry with her.

After Harry got the Firebolt for Christmas, it had been Hermione who told Professor McGonagall about it. This caused the Firebolt to be taken away. It’s important that though Harry was angry with Hermione he was still able to understand she did it because she cared for him. This is another stage of trust which is developed further in books four and five.

chapter 21, page 424:
“Harry, come here,” she said urgently. “Quick!” Harry moved towards her, completely bewildered.

Harry didn’t know what to expect, but still he trusted Hermione enough to allow her to lead him into an unknown adventure. Considering Harry’s background, it’s surprising that there is that much trust in him.

Conclusion: The examples cited were only the less crucial parts where Harry trusted Hermione deeply. However, there are more. I’ll present just one quote more but in it I will bring in how much Harry must trust Hermione. It’s in fact , so complete, it’s a trust beyond friendship. We all know the phrase “to trust someone with your life,” but we hardly ever do so. Indeed, we wouldn’t trust someone who tells us that a jump from a bridge isn’t dangerous. We wouldn’t trust anymore that easily if our life depended on this trust. A wise man said once “The only one I trust with my life is myself!”. Often it’s the case in our own relationship to someone. We rather trust our own decisions than those of a friend. That’s why I like to present the last quote which will prevent my need to present all the other quotes I had thought of. Because if Harry trusts Hermione in these books with his very life, then we have the strongest trust of all.

PS/SS, chapter 16, page 208
“You drink first,” said Harry. “You are sure which is which, are you?” “Positive,” said Hermione. She took a long drink from the round bottle at the end and shuddered. “It’s not poison?” said Harry anxiously. “No – but it’s like ice.” “Quick, go, before it wears off.” “Good luck – take care – “ “GO!”

This is the first scene where it is shown that Harry trusts Hermione very deeply. It told us very much why this relationship between Harry and Hermione is so unique. In PS/SS we didn’t know how important this might be and how crucial it will be in future. It’s OotP that tells us why this trust is that unique because in fact the only other character which Harry trusted so deeply was Dumbledore. I use past tense, because in OoP, Harry’s trust in Dumbledore was damaged. Only Hermione is left; the only person Harry still trusts with his life. The question would be by now why is it so important for Love to trust someone that much. If you fall in Love you give someone else your very heart. You are more then ever unguarded and very easily hurt because you have lain your heart into someone else hands. If enough trust doesn’t exist, its very likely that you won’t be completely unguarded. You won’t give away your heart that easily. That’s a major reason why Harry wasn’t really in love with Cho; he never did trust her that completely. He trusts Hermione, however, with his very life. If Harry develops feelings for her then they would be very strong feelings because of this trust. In a metaphoric way he could lay his heart into her hands and knew she would take care. That’s why it’s said without Trust you can’t Love; completely Love.

Interest

1)
I was wondering why write this scene where Harry tries to talk with Hermione? Why bother? Out of all the books, we have a conversation between Harry and Hermione we could call normal. This is a conversation where it’s all about Hermione; where Harry wants to know about her. This is something we don’t see not even once between Ron and Hermione. Ron isn't really interested in what she likes or what she is really doing. All he wants is to be in control.

COS, chapter 6, page 106
He (Ron) let Harry keep a watch for the carriage, however, and spent the next few minutes craning his neck over the crowd to try and see what Krum and Hermione might be up to.

and

OotP, chapter 16, page 296
Ron looked round at her so fast he appeared to crick his neck. Rubbing it, he said, 'Yeah? What did Vicky say?'

You can read it how he asks not because he want really know her but rather to know what's happens if he isn't around.

OotP, chapter 22, page 444
“Thanks for the book, Harry,” she said happily. “I’ve been wanting that New Theory of Numerology for ages! And that perfume’s really unusual, Ron.”

In OotP we saw the result of this relative interest in Hermione when she thanks the boys for their Christmas gifts. This is why this scene is important. Ron didn't give Hermione something she really likes or really wants and we know it. He gave her something that is not at all Hermione Granger rather any other girl. Ron could have given that perfume to every female he knows. It would have done just as well for Ginny, Mrs Weasley, Lavender, Parvati, Padma, Pansy... you get what I'm on about. Ron could even have given it to a girl he never met in his life and it would have gotten probably the same reaction. Ron Weasley in fact does not know Hermione Granger and frankly he does not want to know her.

There isn't once an interest in Hermione Granger not a single moment that would suggest they could turn out to be lovers. For that there ought to be a mutual interest in each other. This is something we clearly don't have with Ron. All we get is a kind of curiosity about what she is doing but no questions as to why or if she likes it. Ron isn't interested.

2)
This brings me to Harry and to the very interesting part of PoA where we find this scene. In fact it is this that makes H/Hr so much more realistic to me than R/Hr ever could be. Harry is the only one who is interested in Hermione; the only one who asks her about classes about what she want and about her well being.

PoA, chapter 12, page 272
“How are you getting through all this stuff?” Harry asked her.
“Oh well – you know – working hard,” said Hermione. Close to, Harry saw that she looked almost as tired as Lupin.
“Why don’t you just drop a couple of subjects?” Harry asked, watching her lifting books as she searched for her Rune dictionary.
“I couldn’t do that!” said Hermione, looking scandalised.
“Arithmancy looks terrible,” said Harry. Picking up a very complicated-looking number chart.
“Oh, no, it’s wonderful!” said Hermione earnestly. “It’s my favourite subject! It’s –“

The important aspect is that Harry asks her. In OotP we see the result of Harry showing this interest and that his interest in Hermione Granger is still there in his choice of her Christmas gift. As unromantic it might appear, it is in fact this gift that proves Harry is interested and wants to give Hermione something she truly wants. Harry couldn't give this to any other girl. It was a gift for Hermione and only for her. Furthermore, it is important to mark that Harry is indeed listening to Hermione. And we have more than one occasion in OoP in which Harry remembers small this about what Hermione once did or said. This shows an interest in Hermione that we don't see in Ron and never will.

Forgiveness

But to come back to my point I said PoA is a very interesting read and it is indeed because in it we have something unique. Its Forgiveness. Since I'm working on a fic right now I made some research just to get my point across better. I truly believe Forgiveness is one of the most important aspects of Love.

If we really want to love, we must learn how to forgive. - Mother Theresa

To err is human, to forgive is Divine – anonymous

Love is an act of endless forgiveness. - Peter Ustinov

We cannot love unless we have accepted forgiveness, and the deeper our experience of forgiveness is, the greater is our love. - Paul Tillich

The things that two people in love do to each other they remember. And if they stay together, it is not because they forget, it is because they forgive. - From the movie, Indecent Proposal

To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness. - Robert Muller

I just love the one by Peter Ustinov, a great mind no doubt. So simple but so true.

PoA, chapter 12, page 253
Harry knew that Hermione had meant well, but that didn’t stop him being angry with her.

In PoA we read how easily Harry is able to forgive Hermione. Yes he was angry with her but he forgave her. Forgiveness isn't to forget, its to accept.

OotP, chapter 32, page 650
Even through his anger and impatience, Harry recognised Hermione’s offer to accompany him into Umbridge’s office as a sign of solidarity and loyalty.

The same pattern was present in OotP. Harry has an amazing ability to easily forgive Hermione and it is shown in canon. Ron, on the other hand, can't forgive just like that. We saw it in PoA where Ron refused to forgive Hermione for a very ling time. And why was that? Because she didn't say "I'm sorry!" this isn't forgiveness that’s demanding. Love is an act of endless forgiveness mark this and you see Ron does not Love Hermione, if he did he would be able to forgive her just like that, but he never did.
I think and I believe that your willingness to forgive demonstrates how much you love someone. If you can't forgive the person you’re supposed to love, just say you don't love him/her at all.

Overall Conclusion:
If we read the Harry Potter books we soon realise that between Harry and Hermione there exists this sort of basis to fall in love with each other. Throughout the books we have an attraction between them which is not purely sexual. It is built up from the inside to the outside. This sort of attraction is so much stronger attraction which is simply a mere fact of hormones. In PS/SS Harry didn’t describe Hermione as amazingly pretty but as plain. Contrary we get a description of her heart through the books.

She appears to us as someone who has the best at her heart regarding Harry. Throughout the books, Hermione Granger is presented to us as a warm personality and a great characterization. As readers can fell with her and this is due to Harry’s attraction to her character. In GoF we finally get a complete image which shows Hermione is indeed a pretty girl, that she glows. But this alone doesn’t make her attractive, it is the complete image that makes her this way. Hermione’s heart matters that’s why we do not hear again and again she is pretty. This would never maker her more attractive than she already appears.

Love is more than just a somersault; it’s more than just being paralysed by prettiness. Love is being surprised by someone’s personality, being in a spell of this character. Hermione surely has this kind of effect if we think about it. Hermione was the first girl Harry noticed. Meaning that shortly after he had met her, even before they became friends, he was always aware of her even if was just to observe that she was indeed the most interfering girl he ever had met. Even though she was not his friend at this time she still had his attention.

Love went deeper than mere appearance it went just as deep as trust can be. If you trust someone with your very life you are able to really love this one without fears. Because to love is to give away control; to give someone else a weapon to hurt you like you never have been hurt all your life. Hermione has an amazing ability—something that no others have. It is that Harry trusts her. He trusts that she does things because she means well—because she wants to help and not hurt him. That Harry is able to recognize this is amazing and proves a very deep trust between these two.

At some points you ought to be interested in each other. To be interested in how the other feels, what he wants and what he really thinks about certain things. Harry has been interested in Hermione throughout the books, but never as much as in OotP. In previous books Harry would be more quiet and less apt to ask Hermione what she thinks, but not in OotP. He is more interested in what she thinks, even about the tiniest things. The level of interest in her opinion--her true opinion and not just his assumption greatly increased. By way of contrast, we have Cho Chang whose opinion Harry seeks and frankly does not care. Yes, he was flattered to hear he is brave and all those things but he was not interested in her opinions on real issues.

Hermione showed interest in Quidditch as long as Harry played, we even got an impression she might be a fan like McGonagall. The truth was that Hermione is not a fan of this game. All she did was to show interest because Harry was interested and played it.

Finally, Forgiveness, probably one of the most important fundamentals of love and one which can even supersede Trust. Even if your Trust had been wounded, if you can forgive Love can still survive and Trust can grow strong once more. Harry is willing to forgive Hermione easily because he is able to accept her motives which are from her heart. The idea of love is compelling, but forgiveness is even more compelling.

All these fundamentals: Attraction, Trust, Forgiveness and Interest are the basis of love--of true love and without any one of these, you cannot truly love.

To fall in love with someone means you are attracted to this personality, you are in a sort of spellbound; to trust someone so completely that you don’t fear to lose your heart, to be interested in this person so much that you want to know him/her from inside out; to be forgiving because no matter what this person does you know it was meant well.

This is the basis which Harry and Hermione do have. It is quite possible that they might be falling for each other already. If they are, then these books will show us what Love is truly supposed to be and not what people think it is, because Love is more…
